Weather Radio

A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) compliant weather radio is a must for households, businesses, churches and many other organizations. These radios are preprogrammed with specific radio channels that the National Weather Service uses to broadcast current and projected weather conditions in local areas. In the event of projected or imminent severe weather, the National Weather Service will broadcast watches and/or warnings over these channels to warn citizens of potential dangers.

In addition to weather warnings, this system can be used to broadcast "all hazard" warnings. These warnings may be broadcast for any hazard that puts the public's safety at risk and response time is critical. Examples of these types of hazards include chemical spills, train derailments and nuclear accidents. This system can also be used to broadcast AMBER alerts in response to a missing child. Additional information can be found on the NOAA Weather Radio website.

Weather radios can be purchased from many different sources, and range in price from a basic low-cost unit, to higher priced units with many different options and functions. For additional information on radios, visit the NOAA Weather Radio Consumer Information webpage.
